Lowestoft

Across the Norfolk and Waveney areas, Targeted Lung Health Checks are now being offered in the Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth and Gorleston areas.  (Check out the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston pages for more local information if you live in these areas)  Lowestoft has been selected as part of the roll out of the programme because of higher incidences and later diagnoses of lung cancer, making the area a priority for early testing.  From Summer 2025 the programme will start to roll out in the rest of Norfolk & Waveney – check the Norfolk & Waveney Expansion pages for more information

What to expect

If you are eligible, you will receive a message or letter inviting you for an initial Lung Health Check.  All you need to do then is book an appointment with the team. The initial assessment will normally take place over the phone or in person with a health professional. During the initial Lung Health Check, you will be asked some questions about your breathing, overall lung health, lifestyle and family and medical history.

There are three possible results from your lung health check:

No problems found - the health professional may find nothing further to investigate and you will be discharg ed from the lung health check programme. We will write to your GP to tell them this.

Referral to your GP - if problems with your breathing or lung health are found, you might be referred to your GP. The team will write to your GP so they know about the outcome.

Offered a scan of your lungs - If you are assessed to be at a higher risk of lung cancer now or in the future you will be offered a scan of your lungs (a Low Dose CT scan).

Location and contact details

You will be contacted by the NHS if you're eligible for a lung health check. Please wait until you are invited by the Lung Health Check Team. The invitation will be based on your smoking history in your GP record so if you think this might be out of date, please let your GP know and they can update your record.

The check will be carried out by the Lung Cancer Screening team who are based at Bridge Road Surgery on behalf of your GP practice.

The follow up lung scans are being offered at the James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth.
