Norfolk (Central and West)

Norfolk (Central and West)

Norfolk and Waveney (Central and West) STARTING AUGUST 2025

Initially Lung Cancer Screening has been rolling out in small pilot areas.  In Norfolk & Waveney there are projects which cover the communities with higher incidences and later diagnoses of lung cancer which are in and around Great Yarmouth & Gorleston and Lowestoft areas.  If you live in one of these areas please have a look at the relevant page for more local information.

From Summer 2025, the Lung Cancer Screening programme will start to roll out across the rest of Norfolk and Waveney.  The initial target areas will be Kings Lynn and surrounding areas and Central Norwich, but all areas will be reached over the next 3 – 4 years.

For the expansion, Norfolk & Waveney have partnered with an organisation called TIC Mobile who will be delivering the service on behalf of individuals in the area.

You will be contacted by the TIC Mobile on behalf of the NHS if you're eligible for a lung health check. Please wait until you are invited by the Lung Health Check Team. The invitation will be based on your smoking history in your GP record so if you think this might be out of date, please let your GP know and they can update your record.

What to expect

You will be contacted by the TIC Mobile on behalf of the NHS if you're eligible for a lung health check. Please wait until you are invited by the TIC Lung Health Check Team.

The invitation will be based on your smoking history in your GP record so if you think this might be out of date, please let your GP know and they can update your record.

The initial assessment will normally take place over the phone with a nurse or at an in person appointment where needed. During the initial Lung Health Check, you will be asked some questions about your breathing, overall lung health, lifestyle and family and medical history. Based on your answers an assessment will be made of your lung cancer risk.

There are three possible results from your lung health check:

  • No problems found - the health professional may find nothing further to investigate and you will be discharged from the lung health check programme. We will write to your GP to tell them this.
  • Referral to your GP - if problems with your breathing or lung health are found, you might be referred to your GP. The team will write to your GP so they know about the outcome.
  • Offered a scan of your lungs - If you are assessed to be at a higher risk of lung cancer now or in the future you will be offered a scan of your lungs (a Low Dose CT scan).

The programme will be working with new Lung Cancer Screening teams in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital to support patients who need any additional tests or treatment.
